WMS students have been busy this fall serving their communities in a number of significant ways. In October, an enthusiastic group helped close up The Frost Place Museum in Franconia after a busy summer season. Many of our field courses also had a community service component, giving our students the chance to do service work in places outside of our local community.
In November we collected over 200 cans of food for a Thanksgiving food drive organized by a local church. Throughout the fall, the sports teams took time out of their busy practice schedules to volunteer their time; the girls’ soccer team assisted with a youth soccer team and the mountain bikers headed into the woods to improve trail conditions for their fellow riders. November also brought the first of the four Dinner Bell community meals (at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Littleton) that we will cook and serve during this school year.
We have just begun our winter sports season and 22 students have signed up to do community service for part or all of their winter sport. Some will spend their time with the residents at a nursing home and others will work with children – at a local daycare and preschool, an after-school program or serving as a reading mentor at the Littleton Library.
Already this year, over 70 of our students have taken advantage of an opportunity to serve their community for a total of about 700 hours volunteered. Take a look at some photos of our students doing service projects this fall. There will be many more opportunities in the coming months, culminating with our annual Community Service Day in May, so these already impressive numbers are sure to increase. Thank you WMS students for your generosity and willingness to give of yourselves!
Reminder: Community Service Day 2012 is on May 18, 2012 and is one of our 125th Anniversary Celebrationevents. Join us here in Bethlehem for a day of service or, if you can’t come to campus, participate in a service project in your area. Let’s make this a day celebrating WMS service around the globe!
