Our Spring Family Weekend schedule from Assistant Head of School Nate Snow!
Hi WMS Families,
Attached please find the schedule for this upcoming weekend. We are excited to welcome so many of you here to campus for Family Weekend. Though the weather is not really cooperating fully, it is nice to spring in full bloom around campus.
This weekend, we are hosting a number of family-centric activities in honor of this weekend. Tonight the Theater class will be presenting their performances to the community at 7:30. The WMS chapter of the National Honor Society will be inducting new members prior to Community Dinner tonight. There is a parent reception this afternoon at Dickey House, hosted by Tim and Julie. Tomorrow, Ryan is holding a college counseling meeting for parents of juniors at 10:30am. Both lacrosse teams play home games tomorrow (Boys vs. Hebron at 12:30 and Girls vs. Proctor at 2:30pm). Parents also have time available to meet with teachers or advisors and visit classes today as well. The full schedule for families is available on the school portal.
Speaking of the school portal, as we close in on the end of the year, it is important to note that here in the office (and around school), we are already looking towards next year (without getting ahead of ourselves of course). The calendar for next year is currently available on the portal. Students have already signed up for courses, and boarding students are in the middle of room selection today and Monday. Starting soon, they will have a chance to sign up for their Fall Orientation Trip as well. Parents of returning students also have some things to do in the coming weeks. By the end of next week, our 2013-2014 matriculation and health packet information will be available on the school portal. We have streamlined both of these processes for returning families and hopefully you will find these easier and simpler to fill out. We thank you in advance for getting this info back to us in a timely fashion – it really helps!
Plans are currently underway for our annual Community Service Day on May 24th. This exciting and engaging day is always a favorite as we all get a chance to be out in the community in small groups and to work with a tremendous variety of wonderful organizations. Students find that both the work we do and the connections we make have a significant impact on them (as well as the groups we work with). If any families would like to ‘join’ us in doing some service wherever you happen to be on that day, please feel free to do so and send us some pictures! We did this formally with alumni/ae last year for our 125th anniversary, but it seems like a tradition worth continuing and a great way of extending the reach and impact of this great event.
This past week, we held our second all school surprise holiday of the year. This now annual spring event, known as Beach Day, has become a wonderful way to celebrate this community, the arrival of spring, and the end of a great year. This year’s version, held nearby at Echo Lake in Franconia Notch, had trail running, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing, wiffleball, cycling, rapelling, a canoe race, bocce, hiking, volleyball and a wicked cool zipline set up by our climbing faculty. There was also some sun tanning, swimming and likely some napping. A collection of great photos from this day are up on the school’s Picasa page.
As we sprint to the finish line of the school year, we are still taking time to reflect on the year and engage in a continual string of “lasts”. It goes quickly, but there is much to savor and enjoy as well. If you were unable to make it to Family Weekend, please know that we remain available to answer questions (a currently popular one for senior boys is “What color is stone?” anyway) and help in any way with the end of year transition. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
Have a great weekend!
