Wilkinson and Russell at WMS Climbing Camp

Freddie Wilkinson and Bayard Russell visited The White Mountain Climbing Camp to climb with the kids and share their adventures on slideshows.

Freddie Wilkinson, a renowned worldwide climber, writer, and film director, visited The White Mountain Climbing Camp on July 23rd and 24th. The first day, he went cragging (single-pitch) with the campers at Cathedral Ledge, and the second day, he took a couple of climbers out on a multi-pitch climb on Whitney Gilman Ridge on Cannon Cliff. In the evening of the 24th, Freddie shared a beautiful slideshow of his yearly trip to Alaska as a mountaineer and rock climber. Katie, a second-year camper, was so inspired by the slideshow last year that she bought his book and managed to get it signed by Freddie this year. Katie not only received Freddie’s signature but also his advice and assessment on her mock trad lead (the calculated placement of trad gear on the rocks) while climbing at Cathedral!

Bayard Russell visited the Climbing Camp on July 29th. He is also a distinguished climber who founded Cathedral Mountain Guides. Bayard climbed with our campers and topped it off with a presentation. Jake Doyle, 12, says: “Bayard took me on a really cool and unique multi-pitch route, and was very encouraging and willing to help, but also very fun and relaxed. He looks at climbing in a very different way than most people, and is definitely an inspiration. After watching his slideshow, it was really cool to see the different types of climbing he is into, how much fun he has doing it, but at the same time taking safety very seriously.”
