As part of our 125th Anniversary Celebration we revived a tradition from fifteen plus years ago. On February 11th, WMS is poised to welcome back over 30 alumnae/i and their families for a heart-racing weekend of skiing and fun at Cannon Mountain! Discounted Cannon lift-tickets are available to WMS/SMS alumnae/i and families all day on Saturday, February 11th. The family-friendly, all skill-levels welcomed Alumnae/i Ski Race will commence at 10:00 am at Time Zone (serviced by the Eagle Cliff Chair or the Peabody Chair). In addition to skiing on Saturday, several weekend attendees are planning to go on a local snowshoe hike. Following the day outside, we will meet at The Horse and Hound for an apres ski gathering beginning at 4:30 pm. On Sunday, all alumnae/i and their families are invited to the WMS campus for brunch (10:00 am – 11:00 am) and to use the WMS Fitness Center and Climbing Wall (10:30 am – 1:00 pm). Climbing instruction will be available.
Many alumnae/i raced when they attended SMS or WMS and some continue to race and/or be active in the racing world today. Our weekend event honors this strong School tradition and we are thrilled to have a number of race enthusiasts returning. WMS/SMS also has a long history of encouraging non-ski racers to learn and enjoy the sport. At various times in the School’s past, skiing on the hill on campus during the week and at Cannon on the weekend was compulsory. While not required today, WMS continues our racing tradition as well as our tradition of providing students with the opportunity to enjoy skiing and snowboarding.
Our Alpine Racing Team trains at Loon Mountain and competes in the Lakes Region prep-school league. We also have a vibrant Freestyle Ski Team as well as a Snowboarding Team. We still ski and snowboard on the hill (now called Hood’s Hill in honor for former Head of School, Jack Hood) and students have added jumps and rails. We offer numerous recreational skiing opportunities at Cannon Mountain and Bretton Woods throughout the week and students who are new to the sport take lessons. Weekend trips to various local mountains are offered frequently throughout the winter. Despite our ‘low snow winter’, we have found lots of skiing and boarding opportunities this season and are optimistic that next winter will arrive with more of the white stuff we so enjoy up here in northern NH!
We are looking forward to reconnecting on the mountain this weekend and to celebrating skiing at WMS/SMS!
