Earlier this spring Head of School, Brian Morgan, announced his intention to retire from The White Mountain School effective June 30, 2011. Brian graciously saw the opportunity for lending his expertise to our development and admissions office as we continue to grow and strengthen our school in preparation of our 125th anniversary. By shifting his energies to this external role Brian, who will serve as President for the upcoming school year, has allowed for a smooth transition for our new Head of School.
Faced with the need to fill Brian’s Head role, the Board of Trustees swiftly and unanimously decided to name Timothy Breen Ph.D., Head of School effective July 1, 2010. Tim has served the School since January 2006, first as Dean of Studies and most recently as Associate Head of School. He is a distinguished educator with a long career and experience as a teacher and administrator in boarding schools. He holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Michigan. Tim has an educational background well suited to the School’s continuing effort to focus its educational mission and vision, complete its most current strategic plan and strengthen our enrollment management efforts. Along with the dedication and hard work of our talented faculty and staff, Tim’s proven track record of successful management and administration at The White Mountain School both as Dean of Studies and as Associate Head has resulted in our current success. Tim also successfully participated this past year in the National Association of Independent School (NAIS) Aspiring Heads Program with Phil Peck at Holderness as his mentor. The Board of Trustees has had an opportunity for more than four years now to observe and interact closely with Tim as a school administrator. For all of these reasons, the Board of Trustees has full confidence that it has appointed the very best Head of School in Tim Breen to ensure the ongoing momentum of the School, to lead and collaborate with the talented and energetic administrative leadership now in place at WMS and to articulate the right mission and vision to enable our School to celebrate another one hundred and twenty five years of providing the very best private education.
Brian Morgan noted in his letter to the board announcing his retirement that “I am especially proud to have been able to recommend Tim Breen for and support him in the NAIS Aspiring Heads Program. The White Mountain School now has young and energetic administrative leadership … ready to meet the challenges of the next chapter of the School’s history.”
Tim lives on campus with his wife, Julie Yates, and two children, Evan and Tori. Julie, also a long-time independent school educator and administrator, has worked at The White Mountain School for the past nine years. She currently serves as the Director of Alumnae/i Relations.
Please join the Board of Trustees in welcoming Tim Breen as our new Head of School for The White Mountain School. His successes, your successes, will together be critically important to our School’s future.
John E. Brown, Chair, Board of Trustees
