Spring Sport Climbing Competition

The White Mountain School hosted its 14th annual USA Climbing-sanctioned sport climbing competition on Saturday, April 16 at the Buder Climbing Wall. More than 45 climbers from teams across New England competed to rank in the regional and national circuits.

Eighteen WMS climbers participated in the afternoon session: Shane Alvarez ’18, Joey Boden ’18, Justin Chomas ’19, Noble Clark ’19, Chris Gentes ’18, Emani Gonzalez ’19, Jacob Horowitz ’18, Levi Huttner ’16, Nico Kenn de Balinthazy ’17, Ollie Laflamme ’17, Claire Lunetta ’16, Colin Lunetta ’18, Isaiah Newton ’16, EJ Rimerman ’19, Luke Sclater-Booth ’19, Nessa Short ’18, Alex Soulet ’16, Jack Srere ’16. Many other WMS students were on-hand, volunteering as belayers, running a raffle fundraiser for the Rumney Climbers Association, and cheering on the climbers while enjoying a BBQ lunch.

“One my favorite parts of this competition is watching our climbers interact with a wider climbing community,” said WMS sport climbing coach John Barkhausen. The competition is also an opportunity for students to compare their skills to other climbers their ages. “They can see some really excellent climbers and get an idea of how they could progress. I was really impressed with the performance of a lot of our climbers, especially some of our older girls, who placed really well.”

Next up on the circuit is the 2016 Sport and Speed Regional Championships, scheduled for May 14 at Evo Rock & Fitness in Concord, N.H.

The White Mountain School will host its annual USA Climbing Bouldering Competition in the fall.
