Student Ambassador Profile: Djenebou Semega ’19

img_0197_rjAs a Student Ambassador, you are often the first White Mountain student that visitors meet. What do you enjoy about this important role?

As a Student Ambassador, I enjoy the opportunity to speak with prospective students about my real personal experience throughout my years at White Mountain. When giving a tour, I am honest and provide answers to questions that I had before attending the school. Also, when the students join our community, I can be a friend and a role model to them.

Can you tell me about a class you are enjoying this year and what you like about it?

English III with Eliot Taft has been an amazing class so far. Eliot brings so much enthusiasm and energy to every class and designs the class in a way that allows us to think deeply about the books we read or the discussions we have. We are currently reading The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien which is officially one of my favorite novels. All of the class discussions, vocabulary, electronic journals, and poetry presentations have helped me better understand the meaning behind O’Brien’s stories and the structure of the novel.

Congratulations on being selected as a proctor this year! Tell me about what this role entails and what you enjoy about it.

I am so grateful for having the opportunity to be a proctor in Hill House this year. Some of my responsibilities as a proctor are doing check-in, room inspections, checking dorm jobs, communicating with the girls to see how they are doing, reporting any information to the dorm head or AOD necessary, being a role model for the girls, and helping them get through the school year by sharing what I’ve learned when I was in their position. I enjoy that I can be someone who the girls think about when they are struggling either with schoolwork, or are feeling homesick, or don’t know how to get a sub for crew. I also love being able to hang out with them because they are such an amazing group of girls.

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the Lovejoy Chapel. It’s a place where the whole school gathers to do things that benefit the entire community such as Morning Meeting or Community Life Meeting. The Chapel is also where students watch movies with their friends, have rap battles between different cities, dance-offs, and music video competitions. Having a place where the entire community and more can gather excites me and usually makes my day.

Basketball season is just starting up! What do you enjoy about playing a team sport and what are you looking forward to this season?

I enjoy playing a team sport like basketball because it allows me to make connections with my teammates in a way that I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t on a team. We grow together, hang out together, learn together, and also spend about two hours each day with each other. I am definitely  looking forward to seeing how much the entire team improves by the end of the season and also being a role model for the rest of my teammates.
